Worldliness

B3260-00-11_MI am enjoying a new book I picked up entitled Worldliness.  That doesn’t sound good when a pastor confesses he is enjoying a book with such a “worldlytitle.”   However, I want to assure you that the aim of the book is to help believers combat the seductive allure of the world.

A dear brother and I are reading and discussing a chapter each week.  Consider this little gem in chapter 1 about an enormous problem facing American believers, “Today the greatest challenge facing American evangelicals is not persecution from the world, but seduction by the world.”  I think he is right on.  This book is a meditation and application of 1 John 2:15.  One helpful part of chapter 1 is the author’s ability to describe some of the symptoms of worldliness.  Consider the following of one teetering on disaster, “He sits in church but is not excited to be there.  She sings songs without affection.  He listens to preaching without conviction.  She hears but does not apply.”

Finally, the author reminds us of why worldliness can be so dangerous.  Mahaney writes, “We must fight worldliness because it dulls our affection for Christ and distracts our attention from Christ.  Worldliness is so serious because Christ is so glorious.”
