What is the ever-present enemy of any marriage?

“Self-centeredness is a havoc-wreaking problem in many marriages, and it is the ever-present enemy of every marriage.  It is the cancer in the center of a marriage when it begins, and it has to be dealt with.”

“Therefore, when facing any problem in marriage, the first thing you look for at the base of it is , in some measure, self-centeredness and an unwillingness to serve or minister to the other.”

(Tim Keller in The Meaning of Marriage, pp. 48, 51)
